The old Legazpi Airport (IATA: LGP) closed permanently in October 2021 when the new Bicol International Airport opened in Daraga. The new airport now uses the code DRP. Some booking platforms still display LGP, but your actual destination is DRP — Bicol International Airport in Barangay Marayag, Daraga, approximately 15 kilometres from Legazpi City centre. When you land, get a tricycle or taxi to the city — the trip takes 20–30 minutes and costs ₱150–₱250 depending on how well you negotiate. Don't accept the first quote outside the arrivals exit.
Mayon Volcano is the most active in the Philippines — it erupts more than any other. PHIVOLCS issues alert levels that can change within hours. At Alert Level 0–1, all the famous lowland viewpoints (Cagsawa Ruins, Sumlang Lake, Ligñon Hill, Daraga Church) are perfectly safe — they're 5–20 km from the summit. At Alert Level 2 or above, some areas may be restricted. Always check phivolcs.dost.gov.ph within 24 hours of travel. At Alert Level 1, the volcano is actually most photogenic — visible fumarolic activity without the danger. Don't let a Level 1 scare you off a trip you already paid for.
The Ibalong Festival runs August 12–30 every year and draws over 100,000 visitors to a city of under 200,000. In the week leading up to the street parade, CEB–Legazpi fares spike to ₱3,500–₱7,000 one-way — comparable to Holy Week levels. Hotels along Legazpi Boulevard and in the city centre are fully booked 3–4 weeks out. Outside of Ibalong week and the last two weeks of August, you can usually book 3–5 days out and find decent fares. The airport is in Daraga, not in Legazpi City — tricycles and taxis from the arrivals area know passengers have no other choice and quote accordingly. The standard tourist quote from arrivals to Legazpi City is ₱200–₱300. The negotiable rate for four passengers sharing a tricycle is ₱150–₱180. An airport shuttle van also operates from the terminal to the Legazpi Grand Central Terminal for around ₱80–₱100 per seat (leaves once full). Walk slightly away from the main arrivals exit before negotiating. Grab is available in Legazpi City but coverage at the airport itself can be inconsistent — don't rely on it exclusively after late-night arrivals.
Donsol in Sorsogon is 1.5 hours south of Legazpi City by van. The whale shark BWO (Butanding Watcher Outrigger) boats go out from 5:30am–12pm only — the programme stops at noon. If you want to swim with whale sharks, you must leave Legazpi by 4am to reach the Donsol registration office by 5:30am. That means an overnight stay in Donsol or a very early morning departure. Most Cebuano travellers who plan this as a same-day trip from Legazpi miss the boats. Plan a full overnight. And note that whale shark sightings are not guaranteed — January through April gives the best odds, but even then some days are zero-shark days.
